Career Guidance Service

The Extra Mile Group are able to provide a qualified (ICG registered) Careers Guidance Adviser who specialises in work with children and young people who are experiencing disadvantage/disengagement from mainstream services (i.e. NEET, care leavers).

We aim to provide every young person with opportunities to reach their potential and recognise that appropriate education/career services are vital to meet that need.
Many of our specialist programmes have this service attached to ensure that young people are provided with a holistic and comprehensive service to assist their transition from adolescence into adulthood.

Unlike many other third sector organisations, we provide impartial advice which meets individual needs, and equality of opportunity to every young person who participates in a programme.
The Careers advice service is also available to work 1:1 with young people within local youth facilities, i.e. youth centres, colleges and voluntary sector organisations, and can also facilitate group work within these environments

Tasks typically involve:

  • identifying their needs using the Extra Mile Groups specialist referral and assessment tool which meets the needs of this group of young people;
  • providing information, advice and guidance about a range of issues, such as careers, education, employment and training, housing, money, health, drugs and bullying; this also includes specialist services in signposting young people to mainstream provision
  • assisting young people to draw up action plans for employment, education and training and supporting them to achieve these goals;
  • liaising and negotiating with other organisations on behalf of young people;
  • working with families and carers so that they can give support;
  • using computer-aided guidance packages, skills assessment tools, psychometric tests and personal inventories;
  • keeping up to date with labour market information, legislation, and professional and academic developments and professional bodies.
  • Advocacy services to young people and their families
